The wonderful Lyndzi Doyle got me my first day as a Trainee AD on “Ice Cream Girls” working along side Mike Hayes with Lisa Kelly & Owen Magee and the Tullamore Tank Stephen Rigney!

What's your favorite work related memory ?
.
Travelling to Ethiopia with “Sweetness in the Belly” was an amazing experience, an amazing cast & crew with 2 special ladies I hold very dear in my heart Gailers & Ado the two legends.. Funnily enough we done it all without walkie talkies as the Ethiopian government wouldn’t let us bring them over, luckily enough Hugh Fox(legend) saved the day & created a System for us to use!

What advice do you have for those saying it ?

Treat everyone with the same Respect no matter the department or Role.

Get to Know everyones name - greatest advise I’ve ever been given from Daire Glynn.

Always be early for work.

Never be afraid to ask questions.

Take time to talk to new people on set and give advice (we’ve all been there)or just ask them how there day is going!

Michelle Ryan- BTS Producer & DP- In Focus.

How long have you worked in the industry?

Since 2013.

How did you get started ?

I studied Media and Communications in college (and also Philosophy, ha!) with a focus on documentary making. I knew I wanted to work in film from the age of about 12 so was pretty focussed on that. Worked lots in radio (you may remember my sultry tones from my days as regional radio DJ on SPIN SW). I then took off to NYC - which I mention at any given opportunity - on a grad VISA where I worked in advertising, shooting and editing. But I got properly started with Other Voices in 2012/13 in Dingle, Derry and London doing their behind-the-scenes “vlogging”, with thanks to my pal Grainne Carrol. With some luck and chance my name being passed on and I was then hired by Showtime to be their “Digital Content Producer” on Penny Dreadful, producing and shooting all their behind-the-scenes and creative marketing content for all three seasons. That was my first time ever even stepping foot on a set - totally thrown in the deep end - and it was amazing. I've since set up my production company - @weareepikmedia - specialising in BTS/EPK and Creative Content for productions of all sizes.

What's your favourite work related memory ?

I think most recently was on Jurassic World Dominion, when the director Colin Trevorrow asked me to direct and shoot the “documentary” footage for the film itself…which now opens the movie! I ended up with my own unit and day of shooting where my name was hilariously wedged between Colin’s and Stephen Spielberg’s on the callsheet. It was terrifying but amazing. I also got the opportunity to direct a specials shoot with all the animatronic dinosaurs (and their puppeteers) on that!
The other is watching Patti Smith perform for the cast and crew on one of the sets of Penny Dreadful. That was so bizarre and so class! I won’t start on my memories from Cats…😬

What advice do you have for those starting out ?

Be willing to work hard and have confidence in yourself. Be ready to learn all of the time - methods, styles and technology are constantly changing - at no point will you ever know everything.

How did you get started ?
.
I was looking for a change in career and through a friend I was introduced to Mr Steven Davenport @davenportos (gone but not forgotten by all in the locations guild). I had no previous experience or knowledge of the industry but luckily for me I was given a chance. I had no idea how successful the show Love/Hate would become or how that first job would change my career path. There are many avenues into this industry, take the opportunities as they come.

What's your favourite work related memory ?
.
So many great friends made along the way and stories to tell but I often think back to my early days and laugh at myself on this one particular day. I was finally finding my way as a young trainee and building my confidence when in one day I managed to give an extra playing the manager of a chinese restaurant a cheque for 1000 euro after signing his location agreement, which should have gone to the actual manager of the location. Then after a location move I had the key fobs to numerous garage roller shutter doors of an apartment block. I was asked to close one door for a shot and I stood there pressing away at the button with no movement not realising I was banging another door up and down on top of the grips van in a unit around the corner. Luckily the damage wasn't too bad but I remember driving home that day thinking, Is this really for me? I will never forget that day. Things go wrong every day on film sets, there are too many moving parts. It's inevitable. When things go wrong,deal with it and find time to laugh about it later. You're not the first and certainly won't be the last to have a bad day.

What advice do you have for those starting out ?
.
Listen to those who take time to teach you. It's ok to make mistakes just learn from them.Enjoy it. With such a diverse bunch of people all in one place everyday on a film set there is bound to be laughs along the way.

How long have you worked in the industry ?

I only started working in the film industry in July 2021 on Disenchanted as a Petty Cash Buyer. But I have a 30 year background in Television, live music events and the entertainment industry in general. So while I've never officially worked in the Film industry the work and pace is no stranger to me. I love what I do!

How did you get started in the industry ?
.
A family friend of mine, who is a legend in the industry herself, now retired, contacted me. The industry has gotten very busy in the last few years and knowing my working background and my degree in design she asked if I'd be interested in joining and of course I jumped at the opportunity.

What's your favourite work-related memory ?
.
My favourite memory so far was being allowed to dress a set on Disenchanted. When I say dress the set, I mean I placed a few things in a chest or on a piece of furniture on the set, but just getting to do that was amazing as that is where my goal lies. To be a Set Decorator.
.
What advice do you have for those starting out ?
.
Learn everything! Knowing what goes on in every department is vitally important. In my humble opinion. Learn from your colleagues, don't be afraid to ask loads of questions and no job is beneath you. Every single job/task you do is important and benefits the production you are working on. Be prepared to work very hard and reap the benefits because they are ENDLESS!

How long have you worked in the industry?

3-4 years in Film and TV. Previous to that I worked in the multimedia sector for 10 years.

How did you get started ?

Screen Ireland @screenireland set up a course for people trying to get into the film/tv sector. One of our guest speakers on the course was a legend by the name of Kev Cahill @kevycahill . He explained all the roles and skills within Visual Effects to us and I quickly realized that I might be a good fit. After the course, Kev and Screen Ireland offered me a trainee position on The Green Knight. As daunting as it was to give up a full time job and move into this industry, it was the best decision I ever made and I never looked back!

Whats your favourite work related memory?

So many to pick from, impossible to choose one! On Foundation, seeing scans processed from our self built 150 camera cyber scanning rig was a massive achievement and a huge win for our team. We also used LED screens which took months of prep.The cast, crew, and directors loved the immersive experience, their reactions made all the hard work worth it! Oh and how could I forget joining an unsynchronized swimming team made up of a hodge podge of crew in the Canaries. We used "practise" a few mornings a week before going to work,the craic was mighty, and the laughter could be heard across the bay!

What advice do you have for those starting out ?

The most important thing for anyone starting in this industry is a good positive attitude and a willingness to learn, no matter how small or big the task. Oh and dont be afraid to ask for help if you're unsure of any tasks!

How long have you worked industry?

Almost 9 years now.

How did you get started?

My first ever job in Film & TV was back in 2013 as a Trainee Editor on "Dracula Untold" up in Belfast. After that I was lucky enough to get my foot in the door at Ardmore Studios and work in production on Penny Dreadful.

I continued to work in production for about 4 years before jumping ship to Locations with Colm Nolan & Micahel Byrne on
Rig 45. Since moving to locations I can safely say its where I want to be !

What's your favourite work related memory?

Tough question! So many good memories and experiences. Penny Dreadful was an amazing show to work on. The most memorable part was going to Alemria in Spain, where we shot in many of the locations used in "Once upon a time in the west" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". As a lover of westerns this was a dream come true!

"Miss Scarlett and the Duke" was interesting from a Locations perspective. Period shows in the city centre are by far the most challenging for the Locations department. However I learnt a lot from it.

Recently enough though "The Banshees of Inisherin" is up there too. Moving to Achill Island for a couple of months on a Martin McDonagh job was pretty decent, and definitely a big learning curve!

What advice do you have for those starting out?

Treat everyone with the same respect,
no matter what their role or position is.

Be a good communicator and networker. You'll always need to ask for a favour from another department, and always remember to repay that favour when you can.

And finally if you're charging the walkies over night in your house, put your car keys in the box then you'll never leave them behind, a wise man once told me.
